Freedom of Movement...

I feel that prehaps the legging has lasted so long within the fashion industry as a 'generic' garment is highly due to the freedom of movement it creates. Again this idea of a 'second skin' is present, as you a mearly laying the body with fabric is immpetate the existing shape.

Below is a dance routine taken from the show So You Think You Can Dance. We can see Kherington Payne and Stephen 'tWitch' Boss (aka. Twitchington) dance a Krump routine choreographed by Lil' C, to '2 Buck 4 TV' by Tha J-Squad. Throughout this routine we are able to see Kheringtom krumping with ease wearing a pair of leggings. I find this interesting costume choice as they don’t quite match up with the style of the dance. The whole idea behind krumping was about the release of anger and aggression in a non violent manner, so the dance form iteself is of an aggressive nature. Usually clothing of a looser fit is worn, often layered in order to create a larger size of the body itself in turn producing an intimidating figure. By Kherington wearing the leggings I feel that a less intimidating stance is extended from her, by her only wearing this 'second skin' instead of a garment that creates a larger form of the body.

The Generic Leggins...

Leggins are now popularized as outerwear, and as with all other generic stretch garments covered so far, have origins in underwear and also active/sportswear. This relates to this garment being connected to allowing freedom of movement and body gestures, and acting as a second skin. Construction of leggings is determined by how they are cut, and if they are not fully fashioned kints, or tubular knits, they usually have an inside leg seam and a CB and CF crotch seam. Usually elastic is cased in a bind and coverstitched or zig zagged to the waist.

Below are pictures from the label American Apparel, showcasing their wide varieties of leggings. They notoriously known for the provocative advertisements, usually presenting porn stars such as the stunning Sasha Grey photographed by the legend Terry Richardson. I guess I feel this photographs present the idea of the legging as a 'second skin' in a barley their way. I like how the models are natural looking, with no touch ups and over the top makeup. I feel it creates a raw and dynamic situation that portrays nudity and the ideas behind the usage of clothing.

Maaa love...

My favourite version of the singlet would have to be the basketball jersey. For the past year I have come to be obsessed with them. Which may have formed from love of gangstas like these fine babes...

PEACE!

90s Flashback...

When i think of a basic singlet, my mind again flashes back to the 90s to a world of cropped singlets with black chokers and dark lips. I think the images below dont really need much explaining. I love how Mel C's aka 'Sporty Spice's' wardrobe consisted of basically a variation of singlets.

The Generic Singlet...

The singlet, also known as a tank or a cami is a gerneic garment that once again has its origins in underwear, and also active/sportswear. Its function is now extened as designers use it as a comfortable tope to a tight, fitting form to highlight and accentuate the body, revealing the shoulders and arms. Construction of a singlet is varied, and in general differs depending on how the straps and neckline finish.

Below we see the 90s American R&B girl group TLC, consisting of Tionne "T-Boz" Watkins, Lisa "Left Eye" Lopes, and Rozonda "Chilli" Thomas in motion with the geneic singlet. RIP LEFT EYE.
